I have a cycled 18 gallon (US) brackish tank and itend to add one green spotted puffer (nothing else). The ones in my LFS are about 1.5 - 2 inches, but i understand that they grow to about 6 inches.

How long will it be before the puffer outgrows my current tank?

It should be upgraded at about 3". That would probably take a year, tops. Why not go with a F8?

This was another fish that I conisidered, but was put off by the fact that some resources said that they did better in freshwater. Would a single F8 be able to live it's whole life in an 18 gal tank. Could i get away with adding any other fish?

Minimum tank size for a F8 is 15g, so you could try some bumblebee gobies in there. They do best in a SG of 1.005.

Welcome to the site! Good choice with a F8.

There is a lot of confusion surrounding figure 8's because they are collected from FW... however, for reasons not entirely understood that may well have more to do with carbonate hardness and trace elements than salt, they live longest and healthiest at about SG 1.005.
