I wouldn't put an African into a brackish tank, personally, I don't think it would suit them very well. Africans with Mbu would probably work better.

Yes, that was what Nick meant too. African cichlids are strictly FW fish. You might be sucessful keeping them with SAPs but that would be about it, unless you have the space for a mbu.

let's also not confuse mbu and mbuna

I read Nick's and wasn't sure if it was a joke, or talking about fish, but I'm pretty sure he meant fish ;)

As for an answer, I would say it'd be a "watch and see" kind of situation. only with FW puffers though.

... well actually, some cichlids do alright at low salt, don't they?

I've heard Mbu and lake Tangiyaka (or however it's spelled) cichlids go together in the wild and generally have a "keep out of the way" relationship with each other.

I have a cichlid in a 30 gallon and she is huge we call her beast because any fish we put with her she kills. When I say any fish I mean EVERY fish. I can't even keep cichlids with her even if they are bigger then her, I know puffers can be aggressive but I don't think any fish can be aggressive as my beast. I'm not sure what kind of cichlid she is, but she is about 6 years old and we when got her she was just a baby and now she is about 5 or 6 inches. I have seen what they can do so I wouldn't put a puffer with them, but I also know that not all cichlids are like mine.

I think in big enough a tank, with a puffer that's unlikely to snap, it might work, I mean, if you set up a 1000 gallonish mbu tank, I could see tangi Africans adding a little accent to the tank, with that much room, they could even be set up with a natural sized territory, rather than a "crowd" situation, which would be very interesting to watch and not a waste of space since you'd need massive gallons for the puffer anyway.

A couple of weeks ago, we decided to convert our Aulonocara rubescens tank to Parachromis dovii. We moved my male Aulonocara rubescens into our 75 gallon T. sabahensis tank, and have had no problems. Our full stocking list of that tank includes 2 6" T. sabahensis, 5 2" red-tail sharks, 1 2.5" albino rainbow shark, 1 3" golden clown knife, and 2 3" plecos (1 albino bristlenose, 1 leopard sailfin). If you are looking for a community minded fw/ bw puffer, I could not recommed the T. sabahensis more highly.

This is a pic of my Aulonocara rubescens in the totally fw tank:

i had temporarily housed a baby labidochromis perlmut cichlid with my 2 figure 8's and all they did was chase each other around and fight over territory for the 2 days they were together.
