We lost a couple DP's I think due to internal parasites and not water problems since the rest of them seem really healthy! So we were down to three and my wife thought the tank looked a bit empty with only 3 DP's in a 20 gallon tank. So I bought her two more DP's for her birthday which is today. I picked the two fattest and most active ones in the tank. Their names are Chubbs and Tubbs.

One odd thing I noticed when I got them home - Tubbs has some spots on them. I've seen ich before, and I don't think this is ich. It is only present on his spots, and mostly just on the spots on one side of his body. Within some of his dark spots, there are smaller spots that look like an irridescent blue. Any ideas what this could be?

Mine have that too, it seems to be normal. It's the same colour as the shine in their eyes.

irridiscent scales. Several of my new ones have them also. Very striking!

two of mine have them, one of mine has blue and one has turqoise, i call them jewels

I took a closer look at my puffs. The iridescent scales are closer to blue than turquoise, and two of them have the shiny spots. Odd thing about this - I didn't think puffers actually had scales?

They don't, but they can have iridocytes, and some of the DPs are well marked with patches of these, and it is quite striking. Much like certain Cichlids and rainbowfish.

Many puffers show iridescence on their corneas, only a few have much on their bodies, and DPs may have quite a bit.
