Test kits

I was looking at my test kits (it has both freshwater and saltwater), but I wasn't sure which to use for my brackish tank. I'm new to brackish, if you hadn't guessed already. I've been going by the saltwater readings because it does have salt, if only a little for brackish. I keep my tank at 1.004-1.006 for my F8s.

Also, what's the best brand to go with? I don't have a lot of money to throw around, so I want a good value. Something accurate but not too expensive. Thanks!!!

There actually isn't a really big difference in the fresh and salt test kits, there is one test that is different but I can't remember which one... I use saltwater tests on my brackish tank just because thats what I have. I use the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals brand, they aren't too expensive if bought off of drsfosterandsmith.com

The only differences as far as I know are the color charts, the colors are different, at least with the API tests I have.
I like the API Master test kit, it's 30$ or so.

Ok wow good timing on this one, i was just picking up my test kit after raising the salinity in my GSP tank to make sure the cycle held and went oh crap lol

so my old freshwater test kit will work fine at a salinity of 1.012?

and no kidding on the price difference? i bought at my LFS and then when home and would have taken mine back if i wasnt having a bad cycle problem at the time. it's basically half off at drfosterandsmith site.

The same test kit will work all the way to full SW, however, the salts change how the colors on the reaction charts turn out, in some cases darkening them because the salts make a haze in the water, while in others(nitrate comes to mind) they dull the reaction and a lighter shade actually indicates a higher reading on the SW chart.
