Best filter media for a brackish tank?

What do you use and why do some poeple say not to use carbon in a brackish tank? I hate carbon and never use it anyway but i was just wondering why it's not good for a brackish tank.

It is fine to use carbon for a FW/BW tank but a total waste of $$$ IMO. I prefer the Aquaclear filter but instead of carbon, I use 1" filter floss to "polish" the water crystal clear.

I have an AquaClear with sponge, filter floss, and bio media. works nice.

Where did you gets those filters? I don't think I have seen them before? Did you get them online?

got mine a Petco (after a good bit of research) they are a pretty decent price too.

Cool thank you much! I am thinking about getting a 60 gallon or a 75 how big of a filter should I get for a tank that size for puffers? I also have a 14 gallon that I am thinking about getting a new filter, should I get one bigger then the tank needs?

I don't think you can really over filter...
so I'd do 2 50gal on the big tank, and a 20gal on the 14. anybody else?

Ya I'm excited I found a 60 gallon for $100 for everything!! I am trying to get a hold of the guy so I can get it before someone else does, I really wanted a 75 gallon but I can't find one in my price range which is very cheep hee hee! I don't remember what filter he said he had on it but I will ask when I talk to him and then I will just try and get another filter. Does having an extra filter help keep the levels down? Or does it just help with the junk floating in the tank? Sorry if the questions seem stupid but I have always just gotten the filter that fits the tank.

Anything over 50g, I'd either use 2 AC110s (I think that's the largest) or 1 of them & a canister filter. Of course, it also depends on your bioload.

I will have to look into getting a big filter. I went to petco so at least I know what they look like. Do you use those same filters for salt water? I am starting a salt water tank and I know nothing about it so I am going to do it slowly so I guess I will start witht the filter. Thanks for the help!

Filtration for SW is totally different than FW. You could use the HOB filter for a refugium but something that small really is a waste on larger tanks. SW filtration mainly consists of live rock, live sand & a good protein skimmer. On larger tank, I suggest adding a sump & refugium. Bonnie even has this added to her smaller tank.
