The Puffer Forum

he was mine for only 3 days... i feel so inadequite. On the 2nd night home I got him to eat alot of shrimp... i was so happy!!! well that night also i heard my protien skimmer freaking out from the other room... then i saw the worst thing ever. My valentini all puffed up attached to the intake of the water pump.... after alot of swear words i turned off the power and he floated to the bottom... and stayed there all night... the next morning... dead.... Im so heartbroken.

well anyways, i need a new puffer, and alot of places have the min tank size for a porc is 65, well i have a 60 and 3 years of college left (1 pre grad and 2 grad) I plan on upgrading after i graduate, could i buy a young porc and keep him until then? I dont want to get another "small" puffer because of what happened.

Yea, I have a prefilter sponge on my skimmer intake because I have heard stories like yours. A porc really needs more like over 100 gallons, so I probably wouldn't start one in your tank with 3 years left.

I am sorry for your loss. Unfortunately your situation happens alot with puffers because they like to perch. Covers are a good option.

well is there something in between the size of a porc and a valentini or other such puffers that is readly available?

Ceylons or GSP are in between, and tolerate full marine well.

yep nick is right, they do awesome in marine. they also hit your wallet a lot easier. and tend to get more color and active. you would be able to get a nice set up with them in a 60 too.

but i have heard stories about a transfer process from one tank to another,like small to large. ive done it and im sure others have to. theres some screts and corner cutters, but it usually works out pretty well. if you want to know anything else about it contact me or anny of the other super knowledgable people here.

on a side note, im so sorry to hear about your ventini. i recently lost a valentini myself. AND a shark. what a bad day haaha. so i feel for you, but you need to fill the void you know? fill it with puffers.

if you only got 3 ytears of school left and a porcupine is in a 60 it will outgrow it before you graduate. which would obviously cause many problems.


what school do you go to i may be able to work out something if you want to get a diff puffer...(the store i work at gets some nice ones)

I go to school in south east idaho... so not that many stores around me...
