My gsp is about 2 years old and hes been doing great untill i changed the substrate after going to (1.022). all seemed fine, then he stopped eating, i figured it was jsut stress and he'd be fine in a week or so, hes done it before so i wasnt worried.
I went away to school, came home and did a water change mid week 2 times, but once again didnt pay mcuh attention figureing it was jsut wierd stuff from the substrate. the gsp was eating bits and pieces still not much.
i come home this week after leavign him for about a week and a half.

my fish is totally white on one side his eye is clouded over and hes a strange yellow color and has bright red gills. toxic ammonia. as soon as i saw it i grabbed a bucket and did a quick 5g(my tank is 30) change out with some water ive had sitting. he turned greener and the white let up almsot right away

so i went to the fish store to grab more salt and try to get some bacteria.

I came back and he was stuck to the filter again . i threw in some ammounia lock and changed another 5. hes now floating vertically.

honestly is there a way back or should i jsut cool him off. this is really sad i love my t-bone.

No way....I know you love T-bone.
First off, what did you change the substrate to?
Can you give us the tank params?
I'd do a 50% change, but we need those params. I wonder if the bacteria have been knocked out and he's got sky high ammonia and nitrites.

i changed the substrate to crushed coral. i was having a lot of problems with pH and as sson as i changed it he actually seemed very happy and was very bright green and very bright white buzzing around and nipping.
i knew as sson as i saw him my tank had uncycled honestlyi see no reason in even testing. theres nothign that had been introduced or that changed besides the substrate. it must have uncycled. i stopped checkign my water all the time after i had him a year. carelessness. i feel bad.

i just feel bad knowing that i could have stopped him from suffering any more.

i dont think i'll be getting another one.
maybe i'll get some coral and do that for a while.

Dude.....I'm so sorry. Poor T-bone. It must've been some kind of poisoning, and if we can find out what happened, then you can prevent that happening in the future...don't give up on puffers just yet. I know it's upsetting...I remember when Freddie - one of my F8s - died...I was so upset that Steve said maybe we should return Robert and Mags to the lfs.
But I didn't, and they're fine to this day. Everyone on this forum - including PP and RTR - have lost puffers, so don't feel guilty...it happens. You live and learn.

its just bad after almsot 2 years. ive only had dogs that long. i was quite attached. this wasnt my first GSP either. he was my 2nd. my dog knows i'm sad and wants to play.

I know this is gonna seem picky, but if you could test the params soon, it could help find out what happened, then at least you'll know.

For future notice, if you ever encounter a tank crash again, do an 80% water change & add Bio-Spira.

ps. i tested and the Nitrites and nitrates werent registering, the ammoina turned dark dark green as soon as the last drop hit the test. later as i was taking him out of the tank i noticed that my mother had been feeding him and not taking out the uneaten portions (he hadnt been eating much, but usually he eats everything so there is no need) i found like 12 krill, 2 clams and 3 pieces of scallop. i guess the bacteria were fragile after the substrate change and the food threw it over the edge.
