I have wanted a GSP since I was a kid, and now that I have been able to create a very succesful planted/community freshwater aquarium, I want to do something different.

Would you recomend a brackish water aquarium, working up to a salt water as the puff matures. Then I would be able to keep some neat sea creatures along with it (spikey ones).

Or doing a replica high end brackish mangrove tank (until I can get a plant or seads)?

What is the preffered substrate for a GSP? crushed corals/shells and sand?

My substrate preferance is aragonite, as it is a bit more soluble than crushed coral. It provides better buffering during the extended period of slowly increasing specifici gravity as the fish matures.

Tankmates are problematic for GSPs, other than Ceylons or other GSPs if co-housed from the beginning in a tank of sufficient size. The 30 is not big enough for that. Pufferpunk has had some success with certain inverts, but a lot of eaten tankmates as well.

Submerse plants are out other than at very low densities and again when the density is near SW. In between there is nothing available in the trade.

Mangroves are emerse plants (roots in the substrate, foliage in the air) and are quite light-hungry, but can be cultivated indoors with sufficient light and pruning.

I know I am not a mod or admin or anything, but just wondered if this thread should actually be under 'Brackish Puffers.' Just wanted to say that so that there maybe more chance that people will read it if its under the puffs section instead of brackish in general.
