Came across this golden puffer for sale and I have to say he looks better than other ones I've seen in person at half the price. What do you guys think of him?

On a side note, Golden Puffer are known to live peacefully with Dog Faces, correct? I've seen them live with their own species so I wouldnt see why they would with DFs

The puffers you already have get very big, this guy is no exception.

It's no good justs hoping you can upgrade at some point...

don't get him unless you can take care of his and your others needs at their full adult size....


He looks beautiful though... why is he half the price? Sounds dodgy....

What size tank do you have?
Most people I know who keep SW tanks go by the rule of 1 smooth and 1 spiky puffer per tank.I wouldn't do it.

He's half price because someone special ordered him but his I guess his tank crashed before he could pick him up. He's from bluezooaquatics at 240 bucks which is waybetter than the almost $700 I've seen at other places. As for the tank, I'm guessing he needs something like a 240 gallon?

If you're keeping a Dogface, Burrfish and Porcupine in the same tank as him then I would suggest at least 240gal, even bigger would be better. Keeping all those big puffers cramped together is asking for trouble.

I have spoken with Mike at Blue Zoo who seems to be their resident guy with some solid experience with puffers so first and foremost - I'd have a few talks with him - although it sounds like you may have already which is great.

As for what the others are saying - absolutely agree - these guys will continue to grow if properly cared for and with the others you have - unless you are planning to upgrade - I'd say a minimum of 240G sounds about right...as for getting along - his size should protect him just fine - he will probably be a shy eater - so may want to make sure you have what Bluezoo is feeding him - they will probably tell you right off it is their "special dry mix" but again good conversation with Mike will let you know - likely otherwise on the food...

So there is some good info here...weigh it and decide - he does look like a great puffer and my experiences with Blue Zoo have been nothing but positive...

Wow, are they really that expensive?

From my experience, it varies greatly depending on where you are purchasing from....I always go with places I know well - have talked with them, dealt with individual people and can contact them directly if need be...all try to build a relationship with these stores - they are usually more than willing. Must say that Bluezoo has probably the absolute best customer service. Liveaquaria also has excellent customer service - but not quite as personal as I would like....Saltwaterfish...and this is just from my experience, pretty good selection, good quality, poor customer service....

Go with what you know and get as much info about puffers you 'may' want to spend alot of money on...really I even try to get as much info on any puffer, considering QT is somewhat hard on them and the higher the quality of animal - obviously the better off you are in the long run...I am preaching the choir here I know but hey some newbies might see some beautiful animal and purchase it on a whim or maybe read this first and think twice!
