Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone knows where to buy live feeders relatively cheap. I would like to be able to get my baby fahaka some clams or small crabs or just something different. I have been feeding him live crayfish, ghost shrimp and mealworms but i know its best to feed a variety so i want to do the best i can for him. I prefer live foods right now because he is in with my chiclids and they would eat the dry krill or anything like that before he would get a change to even consider it. Any advise would be great. Thanks!!

still want them. try a bait shop, pet store (with aquatics department), or catch them.

You can buy clam, mussel and crab from your grocery store. Just make sure they aren't seasoned with anything. All you have to do is defrost them in tank water and feed them to your puffer!

When buying clams and such from the store, do they need to be in the shells for the puffers to eat? I have given my puffers (green spotted and target puffer) these things but have to open the shells a bit so they can get inside the shell to eat the "goodies" I live on the coast and have a lot of bait and seafood stores very close to me but I'm always unsure what to buy and what is safe to give my puffers. I was told to get a shellfish lic and go find mussels at the beach for them but again I'm afraid that I might poison them or something. Also do the clams in shells have to be live? I have been buying them that way but unless I feed them to them in a day or so the clams die and spoil. I do give my puffers other seafood like shrimp and prawns that I buy frozen in the seafood dept at the store as well as freeze dried shrimp, shrimp pellets, blood worms (frozen, live and freeze dried) along with a number of other fish foods. I have been trying to get my pond snail population up but so far I hardly have much to give them other than one or two every few weeks. I only have one place I've found to buy pond snails and that is a ways out of town and I haven't been able to go there in some time to buy more. Any suggestions or ideas would be great, I love my puffers and would hate to see them get sick or have their teeth give them problems eating.

Thanks,
Rene

I just buy mussels, shrimp and clams from the grocery store. You actually want to freeze everything you buy and then defrost in tank water. By freezing them you ensure that potential parasites will die.

My GSP is still small so he can't eat all the meat on a mussel in one sitting so I save it for a couple days in the tankwater in the fridge so then by the end of it all he is doing it scraping his teeth on the shell trying to get meat off.

you should be able to get pond snails at any LFS. they will usually just give them to you, cause they are pests.
