I have had my eye on this one for a long time - He/She (how do you sex puffers without dissection?) is a Arothron Nigropunctatus - almost completely black except for the "dalmation tail" ...My wonderful girlfriend surprised with him as a Valentine gift - I know I am new to this forum but if you read my other thread, you know how much I love these guys! He is in the big 180 with all the others and they love it! They blow bubbles at each other and the "Black Dog-face" eats like a little pig! Couldn't have asked for a better to addition to our puffer family!

You all are too nice - seriously my pic-taking skills need to be honed - I bet I have shot 100 pics of this guy alone tonight. Any tips on getting past the tank glass glare? I'll upload some more tomorrow

I would turn off the camera flash and use only the aquarium lights. My pics tend to look good IMO because I turn off all the lights in my room and the tank is the only source of light. You could also try to take the shot at a bit of an angle to reduce the reflection of the camera in your shot.

Very nice fish. Turn the macro on on your camera and don't use flash, just the lights from the tank.

gorgeous fish!

You are gonna need spme seriously big fishtanks in the not too distant future!

Ps.. as for fish photography...

i'm assuming it's a standard digital camera, as in not SLR?

Can you get a piece of white card/ folded over paper and put it in front of the flash, but angle it so the flash bounces onto it, and the up to the ceiling..... (45 degrees)

this way you still get the extra light into the shot.. (it'll bounce back down from the ceiling and illuminate the tank from above instead of the front...)

but not get the flare on the front of the glass.....

there you go, tip for ythe day for you.....

(it helps that i'm a pro photographer... as well as a fish geek.. :-) )

to be fair I use an SLR with a telephoto lens....

I also have a speedlite camera flash that fits on top of the camera and i can point at the ceiling, but using the piece of card will have the same effect...

I can also change the speed so i can make sure everything stays sharp, and use a wide apperture that gives the background blurred, foreground sharp thing and lets loads of light in..... but a standard digital can't do that i'm afraid...

damn, shouldn't have said anything, now my cover is blown. :-)

My jaw dropped when I saw this. I have been wanting one since I discovered puffers. They are gorgeous! I have heard of them as "black dog faced" or more often as "midnight puffer". Absolutely gorgeous.
