OK, Got Finquel...

...now what? I have no idea from those directions how much to dose for a small, flat, 4" (modestus) puffer. Anyone use this stuff yet?

What do the directions say? If it doesn't say the dosage on the bottle/container, maybe you could send them an email about it. It really should say it on the container though. I'm sure you already know this, but don't do it without being sure of the dosage. Good luck!

There are different fish listed (mostly game fish) & dosages for them. None as small as my guy. Plus, I don't have a gram scale (anymore... ;)).

Hmmmm..... Seeing as Finquil is made mainly for game fish, I would suggest emailing the Finquil makers and asking them. The LAST thing you want is an OD'd Modestus. The second-to-last thing you want is a Modestus that's floppin' around and trying to puff while getting worked on. Unless he can't wait at all, I think it's in the best interest of you and him/her to email them. I mean, what's the worst thing that could happen? It's your call. I mean, if you can manage figuring out the dosage, you might be able to pull it off, but with a fish that rare, I'd be extra careful what you do with it.

No emergency--been meaning to do this for the past couple of months. I've had him about 4 years now & I can see him holding his mouth open a bit but seems to still be able to eat fine & he's nice & thick. I could always use the Clove oil butr I'd rather try the Finquil, plus it cost me like, $25.

Is there any way you could film this so people could use your example in the future?

Well, since you're apparently not in a hurry to do it, be sure to plan it out well. I'm sure that you've done it before, but you'll need a small bucket w/ tank water to temporarily hold him/her in, another small container w/ the solution, and then when you're done with the teeth, put him back in the first container for about 5-10 minutes. My modestus took about 7-10 minutes to get re-oriented. I used cOil though, so it might be diff w/ quel

The dose is 100ppm. Make sure to aerate and check pH - may need to buffer.

LOL Groovydude, I wrote the article on that!

PQ, Can't I just use tank water? This is for a FW fish. Also, is this good to use to transport a puffer? I am shipping the babyburrfish to CAN in the spring.

You can use the tank water but the finquel can lower the pH.

The only problem with shipping with the finquel is there is no guarantee that the fish will not be sensitive to the medication or become too sedated.....this can be used as a euthanasia drug at a different dose.....I would be weary of it.

Aren't you going to ship overnight?

Yes, I'll ship overnight--just saw in the instructions that it could be used for shipping & was wondering if that would be a good idea or not.

Back to my puffer (the reason I bought the stuff), is it best for me to mix the whole 5g worth for 1 little puffer, just to trim his teeth?

I mix up the smallest volume to save medication. I would make up a gallon for a small puffer.
