Breeding snails?

I have an empty 20 gallon I want to use for breeding snails. I want to breed snails to feed to the Fahaka Puffer I plan on getting. What type of snails would be best? and how do I breed them?

Check out our Library on a great article on that.

Definately read the article. I personally found ramshorns bred and grew the fastest, plus they get to a larger size that would be more appropriate for a Fahaka. For smaller puffers, or while the Fahaka is young, pond snails work very well.
Most other types of snails take too long to grow or breed to make them a good choice.

Do fahakas stay small enough for snails long enough to make it worth it?

Good atricle, thanks. That will work while he is small, but what type of snails do you feed when a Puffer hits the 1-2 foot mark? I have seen Giant Apple snails, would they be good? I wish I could just find a reputable grocery list for feeding a Fahaka.

By the time the medium the large puffers outgrow home-grown snails, they are ready for the chunkier grocery store foods. My big mbu puffer and two of the three Fahakas had a lower size limit on what they would eat in snails. Their tanks became common-pond breeders, all ~1/4 inch and under, after which they were harvested. No Ramshorns, they apparently need to be bigger to breed or were eaten smaller or both.

Yeah, I would use grown or almost grown ramshorns, and when they r young, I would use pond or bladder snails.
Hopefully this helps.

Look man, you seem like a nice guy but it gets pretty annoying when you bring back such old threads. It adds spam to the "Unread Posts" section, since the topics posted are almost never still relevant to the members who originally made them. I'm not trying to be mean or embarrass you in any way, and we all understand that you likely didn't know, so just going forward we would appreciate if you only added comments to threads that were more recent.

I\ve told him every single time he does it. It's getting really old & I have considered removing him from this forum.

I would ask that you please don't, he's a puffer keeper who definitely seems to care a lot and wants to learn and help.
