The Puffer Forum

I'm trying to identify an unknown puffer from Peru, and the only puffer I know of from that area is Colomesus asellus. But the colors doesn't match. Is there any other puffers from Peru. I can't think of anything else. Psittacus is from the wrong side of America, and has the wrong colors as well.

Perhaps Corvus might be able to find a variant.

C. asellus is so far the only described true freshwater puffer from America, but it occurs in somewhat variable colors depending on origin. Peruvian freshwater puffers are generally C. asellus.

However, there are some coastal, marine puffers at the Peruvian coast that possibly might enter a river mouth.

I don't have any pics, only a description (someone is coming back from Peru with these puffers), and they are yellow and white - striped. The only thing I can think of is that it's an albino form of the SAP, but he brings more than one, and that would be rather strange - many albinos?

Or it could be a poor explaination, and he means that it has yellow and white stripes, but has other colors as well. In that case it's a SAP

Sorry, yellow with white stripes and from Peru does not ring a bell.
There are some Peruvian marines with white stripes, but they are not really yellow, as far as I know.

Maybe there will be pictures when he is back with the puffers or a somewhat more detailled description, e.g. number of stripes, lateral or vertical, etc.
