Are these OK to feed now and then to abei's? I tried today and they gobbled down both, no problem. I do feed them mainly snails, frozen bloodworms and live blackworms but was wondering if it would be harmful to throw a cricket in now and then.

Crickets are fine--best if gut-loaded. Meal/super worms are extemely fatty & their chiton (their hard, outer skin) id difficult to digest. OK if fed as an occasional treat.

great advice their PP I didn't know that!! I think Chitin helps humans lose fat though, something to do with fat metabolism or something. MMMmm Mealworm diet could be the way for the more portly of our species

I stopped eating spaghetti for a year because my cousin told me it was dried out worms that got cooked(I was like 3).

I think I'd loose a lot of weight if all I could eat were mealworms, with or without the chiton.

I have to add this even though it's extremely gross.

My big GSP once accidentally ate a cockroach. And by cockroach I mean those huge 2 inch flying Texas roaches. He ate it in just a couple of bites and thankfully it must not have been exposed to any toxins because the fish didn't suffer any ill effects. In fact, he acted as if it was the most delicious thing he had ever eaten in his life and spent a couple of days looking for more. It ALMOST made me want to see if any place sold roaches to feed him as a snack. Too back roaches are one of the few bugs that squick me out completely.

I have fed him live crickets before as snacks, which he likes, but that was nothing compared to how he acted with the roach! UGH!

Where did it come from? Just flew in there?

I don't like killing bugs, so I usually catch them in a cup or bag or whatever is handy and release them outside. I had this one caught in a bag, but it was escaping and I kind of freaked out and opened the lid so it would fall into the tank. Not a safe thing to do, I know, considering I had no idea where that roach had been.

I am DEATHLY afraid of spiders, and here in SC we have big, hairy wolf spiders. When it starts to get chilly outside they like to try to find ways into the house to keep warm. Well if my husband is anywhere in the state I make him kill them so I don't have to. Seriously, I am like the cartoons of the women standing on the stool, screaming holding her dress.
Anyways one day I couldn't get my husband to answer the phone so I had to remove one myself because I be darned if I was going to just wait and the frickin thing run under my sofa and lay eggs or something. *shutters* So I went and got my broom and struck the spider one good time (mind you he was the size of a dinner plate....ok ok maybe a tea cup...er shot glass) Anyways, I molly-whopped him good and managed to finagle the broom to lift him up off of the floor. Well I was scared he would come to and crawl up the broom stick and bite my arm so I was looking around for something to throw him in.
The closest thing was my lion fish tank, and at that time that stupid wrasse was still in there. I rotated my body around (it was some gymnast/matrix stuff) and opened the top of the tank, then did the little rotate again and tossed the spider into the tank. Well he was semi-coherent by then so has was doing that little "I'm a spider I can float on water thing", when all of a sudden, SNAP!!, that dumb wrasse snatched him, drug him under the water, beat him against a rock then swallowed him whole. This was a fine day in the Chin house-hold.
