Anybody have any idea how long a Valentini Puffer typically lives?

Yes, but also very important is how the fish were caught and treated at the wholesalers.
Cyanide catching and using other chemicals as well as use of explosives is IME far more common in the industry than generally assumed. We even received fish caught in the USA last year I'd bet they were caught with cyanide. So it is not only Indonesia, Africa, India and the Philipines. Those methods dramatically decrease the life span of our fish, but hey - when they die, we order new ones... Therefore, I try to find out exactly who caught the fish and how they did it... still no guarantee I'm not lied to. Those "no cyanide" labels etc. and statements of the importers... I often doubt...
