The Puffer Forum

This is such a beautiful puffer I would really like to get one. It seems to be quite rare though. Does anyone know of where I can get one? I guess I will also have to see if any of my LFS's will order one.

So far there is only one place I know of that had them and sadly they only ship to the UK. They are rather new to the scene. Maybe another member has had better luck.

Every time we`ve ordered pustulatus they have been Fahakas aka tetraodon lineatus on arrival.
We keep trying though!

They are beautiful fish, but incredibly rare and expensive, and half the time they end up being Fahaka's. Maybe a Fahaka instead? They are very very similar.

I was thinking that but my research on the Fahaka shows that it seems to be incredibly aggressive to the point of not being able to keep tank mates. The Cross River on the other hand tends to be a little less aggressive. I would like to have some tank mates...

I'm pretty sure the few people who kept them couldn't keep them with anything, they were just as aggressive as Fahakas. If you want a puffer with tnakmates why not try SAPs?

They are just as aggressive as fahakas most of the time. That being said, there are about 1% of the Fahakas that do allow tank mates. Even though, everyone needs their own territory & the tank has to be large enough. I happen to have a 10" fahaka that was moved to a 55g (at 5") with 2 with plecos & a softshell turtle. Within 2 days, the whole back rim of the turtle's shell was scallopped, so he got his own tank.

He now lives in a 125g with:
12" Goldspot pleco
6" sailfin pleco
10" Yellow-finned chalcius
2 7" Clown loaches
9" Lancer catfish
5" Rainbow shark
6" Redtail shark
5" Bosmani rainbow
7" Frontosa
8" & 9" Elephant noses
12” Black Ghost Knife
Occasionally there is a fin nipped but all in all, he's a wimp & the Goldspot & Frontosa is always kicking him out of his cave.

SAP is South American Puffer I assume. I had one and it was good. He spent 99% of the time frantically running up and down the side of the tank probably chasing his reflection... I'd like to get several in a larger tank though.

I just added a tiny one to my 90g heavily planted discue tank. It was mislabled & had no tail. It spends most of it's time checking our the decor but I still see him chasing his reflection occasionally. I'm thrilled to report the lil fella eates flakes! His tail has completely grown back too.

The tank was very heavily planted and had a lot to explore. He was just a psycho...

you are lucky that he eats flakes! Mine would only eat frozen blood worms!

I was quite surprised myself! I think it's the competition of all the other fish eating it. I guess since everyone else was going at it, it must be good stuff.

so far my GSPs eat whatever hits the water. so far they've eaten: blood worms, shrimp, mussels, clams, oyster, meisis shrimp, one fiddler crab, snails, flakes, pellets, peas, cucumber slice (meant for snails). and they only go up and down the glass if I'm standing there... they are surely spoiled.
