substrate

what would be a good depth for the substrate, and would all of it have to be live sand or could i have some live sand and some regular marine sand? also is it a good or bad idea to get sand from a beach figuring that its live already?

What kind of tank are you putting it in? Fresh or Marine?

I'm assuming marine.
Beach sand could contain contaminants so don''t use that.
Any sand you want is fine the LR will seed it and make it live, the stuff stores sell as live sand is not live at all.
You could go to a local reef club and get sand from the but pool filter sand will be the cheapest way.
