F8s plus Ceylon? (53G upgrade)

Hi,

As you know I've had a pair of F8s for a long while now, in a 36G brackish tank (1.005SG). Long while is, ooh, about two years I think, something like that. They've been living with a black molly for this time too, without any issues.

Anyway, I'm upgrading their tank since we're decorating the room they're in, and it was as good an opportunity as any (any excuse hehe). The new tank is a 53G (200L). I'm wondering, since they'll be moved to the new home, whether it's possible to introduce a ceylon puffer into the mix, particularly since this is a good time to introduce a new tankmate (i.e. they'll all be introduced to the new tank at the same time).

Are F8s and Ceylons compatible? Are black mollies compatible with Ceylons? The molly can easily be introduced into another of my tanks, if not; the main issue is whether my two F8s would get along with a single Ceylon.

Any tips, or am I best leaving well alone?

Best to leave it, ceylons (much like GSPs) require full marine when full grown.

Well, I'm not entirely convinced by the full marine argument (in general) since these are amphidromous fish we're talking about (but I don't want to start a massive debate about that or cause trouble, it's just MHO), but thinking about it some more my main concerns would be: aggression levels (ceylons are more aggressive than F8s), size, and so on, and so I think that the end result is the same - probably best to be safe than sorry.

My F8s will probably thank me for it...well...if they knew of the idea they probably would!

Out of curiosity though: has anyone tried this before?

Ceylons, like gsp's will do well in high end brackish/marine when they are mature. Conditions which are not suitable for F8's. Also, it is recommended to have at least 40g, for one ceylon. We have 2 in a 120g and there is occasional arguments.

Hi, sure, I've read the puffer 'pedia countless times in the time I've been on the site so I know the recommended SG for these fish, and the tank size. The new tank is a 53G as I outlined in the OP.

I'm not going to go with the idea, it was just a thought. But my question is now: has anyone tried this, and what observations can you report?

Can't see it working well. Ceylons are much more aggressive than F8's. In the wild F8s are FW fish so unless your willing to risk losing your f8s and molly and possibly the ceylon to premature death I would definitely not do it.

I'm really sorry if I'm being dumb here and not making myself clear already!

Too large of a size/aggression issue. I wouldn't do it.

pufferpunk said it. ceylons get larger than cute little figure eights.

I am, thanks. It's slightly irksome when I made it clear that I'd accepted the useful and helpful advice off the bat. I know a lot of newcomers need persuading a great deal, but I'm not one of them :)
If I was arguing about the advice, I'd understand (well, I wouldn't since I'd be arguing! lol), but I'm not. I agreed. Several times. Over and over again ;-)
