When I bought my puffer, it was labeled as a "Hawaiian Toby." I was just wondering why it has blue spots as opposed to all white spots. All other pics I've seen only have white, but mine has both white and blue. I thought it could be a C. papua, but it does not have the false eye. Is this natural or do I have some other puffer?

It looks almost like a Canthigaster punctatissima.

My LFS has a puffer like that. They called it a blue spotted puffer-$39.99.

When I looked in the puffer pedia for it I did not see anything that looked exactly like it. The closest I found in the puffer pedia shows blueish stripes across the top of the fish: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/ug. ... e/C_Papua/

It is a very beautiful puffer although the one at my LFS did not pay any attention to anyone near the tank. It liked to go behind the rock. It's personality seemed quite different from gsp's.

My LFS had 3 the other day, I wish I could have got one.

Paupan Tobies have orange on their face and tail areas.

I think it may just be a color morph. I have never seen one with only white spots. The other day I saw a papua, but I think they are too similar to be placed together. I just gave mine a tooth trimming, it was our first experience. It is slowly starting to come out more from hiding.

I want to retract my statement that it may be a color morph. I was looking at pics of the three puffers mentioned above: C. punctatissima, C. jactator, and C. papua, and they are not my puffer. I noticed the first two looked almost the same to me and Chin is right, it's clearly not a papua. But what I noticed is the tail on my puffer is not clear. The patterning on the body is continued on the tail and when it closes its tail, like above, the tip looks blue. It can't be seen on my pic, but the lack of a dot is what clued me in on the tail diffence.

He is very beautiful and looks quite healthy though.

i saw a pictuer of ur puffer labled Canthigaster Jactator so i bet its just a color morph

Okay, I realize this is out of date, but this is the puffer I saw at the LFS today that was labelled as a Blue Spotted Puffer, and the lad I was chatting with couldn't find any info on it in his books, so I have to go back tomorrow or something and get the scientific name from him (which he has on file somewhere). I'm really interested in this little fella, especially since he's only $19.99!

Are these puffers reef-safe? I'd like to (eventually) make the tank a reef tank of sorts.

No, tobies are not reef safe. They have a habit of "tasting" any corals you have. Better to be left to fish only.

Aww, fair enough. What other fish can they be kept with? If it's a really long list, you don't really need to list the whole thing. ^_^

Seeing as puffers can be nippers you would consider some fish that would ultimately be able to get away from the puffer quickly. Basslets are a good choice.
