Been researching porc's and therefore saw a reference to getting burrfish instead as they are smaller.... but every website seems to just interchange them, and I can't get an actual factual account of a burrfish... size, agression etc... excat difference between it and a porc..

I also can't get a specific scientific name.. or availabilty etc..


(Not planning anything as I've not got a tank set up yet, so just researching.)



If anyone can explain about the burrfish, preferably the smallest types, potential issues, tankmates etc then i'd be greatful...

Did you check their profiles in our Pufferpedia? I can tell you porcs do much better in captivity than a burrfish. Burrfish generally have concave tummies while porcs are nice & round. Burrs usually have a big problem with internal parasites & are difficult to get eating. Both grow to about a foot.

Am i being blind then, cos I can't see a burrfish in the marine puffers...

porc yes... found that one, but been through all threee pages and can't see burrfish....

I'm pretty sure the burfish is yet to be added to the pufferpedia. I'm think that originally it only had puffers that were common to the trade, if it litsed every single puffer it would need its own server!!! The other reason is that burfish are harder to get to survive long term and for this reason not deemed a suitable puffer for the non-expert. Just my guess though

I've been wanting one of these puffs for a while... I finally broke down and got myself an early Christmas present. Here is a pic of my new (unnamed) burrfish in QT:

Nope, and shorter spines. More like a porcupine puffer having a bad hair day.

I think they are different species. After much poking on fishbase and WWM, I believe mine is a Cyclichthys orbicularis, which is one of the puffers on my "dream puffers" list. (He is also the messiest eater I've ever seen! Can you say daily 10% water changes while he's in QT?)

I think I've seen the cutie you've got in the shop I used to frequent in San Diego. They called them "devil puffer" or "devil burrfish". I have no idea what species he might be. (Maybe Chilomycterus antillarum or Chilomycterus antennatus?) Whatever he is, he is gorgeous!

Not found any reference to them in shops or online over here.... (uk)

not common in the US either - they usually come in as "assorted puffer".
