The Puffer Forum

I feel bad asking you guys this question but I need an answer or two. I was at a pet store the other day and they had some small puffers that I was looking at and I cannot remember the names of them for the life of me. The guy said they only grow up to about 3 inches and can live with other fish. They were freshwater puffers too, can anyone help me out with some information on them?

Look at the puffers in our Pufferpedia, under the Learn tab. You should be able to find them there, if they are somewhat of a common species.

Sounds like South American Puffers to me.

they were pretty common I believe, for some reason Figure 8 and Spotted stick out in my mind. Does that sound right to anyone??

Well...there are Figure Eights and there are Green Spotted Puffers. Do you remember what they looked like?
F8's are low end brackish and GSP's are high end to full marine. Some LFS's have a habit of confusing brackish fish with primarily freshwater.

If they are South American Puffers, tell them to send one to me

thats it, they were green spotted puffers. can you tell me more about them?

thank you for the info. I saw that is says they are brackish, I know up the store I saw them they weren't in brackish water and they seemed to be doing great. Is that possible?

Short-term, they are fine in FW. Stores aren't going to set up a BW system just for a few BW fish passing through. Your post says small puffers though. Did you check the adult size & recommended tank size for a GSP? F8s are smaller & don't require nearly as much salt.

Unfortunately they may be fine for now, but as they grow their health will deteriorate due to it. I actually had mine in brackish and ended up moving him to full marine conditions and that change made him a whole new puffer. Did you read the information in the library like PufferPunk suggested?
