Well yesterday i was really worried about Yoda, he hasn't been eating, and I was getting ready to convert him to a brackish tank, but i needed the money for the instant ocean, which is a little more then i thought. So i was going to wait until the end of the week to buy it, hoping that he would hold strong. Well I went to class last night and when I got back home, in my room was a fresh box of Instant Ocean!!! I was so excited!! So i got everything ready to do a water change and start converting Yodas tank. So I took out about 4 gals of water and mixed the fresh stuff with the IO....and slowly added it to the tank....i think i did maybe 2 gals an hour. finally at 1 in the morning i was done...everything seemed to be doing good, Yoda actually seemed to have perked up. Well I went to sleep.When I woke up in the morning the first thing that I went to do was check on Yoda....

Unfortunately Yoda did not make it thru the night...he had gotten really skinny from not eating and i think the change was too much for him...

well now i have a half brack tank, so i think i am going to continuing converting it and maybe try again later with a puffer...

That sounds like it was a rather fast conversion...


exactly what salinity did you raise it to? Was it from freshwater?

well i have to say that i am not completely sure what salinity it was up to, it was from fresh water...i did a 4 gal water change...adding in total 10teaspoons of IO....there was one problem...i didn't have a hydrometer at the moment, that was the one thing that i didn't have...so i figured i would give it a shot with out it...i should have waited to get one the next day then try converting....one thing that i now realized that contributed to Yodas demise was that whatever food i was putting in the tank he would eat a little bit then, i believe, he stashed it under a sunken ship i got for him...when i was doing the change i found the food, but it didn't occur to me that he might just need a plain water change at the moment....i was feeding him krill....i'm sure that it fouled the water, but that didn't occur to me at the moment...

We all live and learn...but you'll be in much better shape for your next little puffer.

Pretty much everyone here (including me) has lost a puffer due to not knowing any better, so you're in good company. Don't beat yourself up, just, like Jayhawk said, live and learn. I'm sure you'll have a lot more success next time. Onwards and upwards.

That amount of salt had little to do with his problems, it was a minor amount. You are probably right about the krill fouling the water, thats a hazard with caves and such is having the current push food remains where you can't see them.

Pam's right most of us here have lost a puff the same way, and it hurts, but we learn and do better.

I am going to wait a while to get my next puffer...i have a few other plans to getting going first, and there are a couple puffers that i really want, so i am going to wait until i can find them
