Just added first bit of salt

Hello
Today i added 2 gallons of water with 2 tablespoons of marine salt, into my ceylon puffer tank. My question is does the salt that i have added together with the salt at the next water changes compound in the tank and get greater or does it get removed my some means?

I just want to take it really slowley to avoid bacteria crashing in filter. Surley if i kept adding a tablespoon every week then eventually over a month or two the salinity in the tank should be roughly what the buckets are, is this right? Then i would start adding more salt to the water changes, maybe two spoons full per gallon, to increase the SG to about 1.015, correct?

Help would be appreciated.

Dave

When you do a water change you will remove some salt but some will remain in the tank. Say if your tank was at 1.004 and you did a 50% change and then added just fw it would them be around 1.002. So when you want to raise it you add the amount of salt to replace what you have took out then a little more to raise it slightly.

Do you have a hydrometer or refreactometer? You'll need one to properly measure the SG. If the SG of the new water is more than the SG of the tank water, the SG will go up during a water change, vice versa.

How big is your pusser? No need to raise the SG to 1.015 if it's still a juvie. Save $$$ on salt.

Its a ceylon puffer Hes about 3" including tail, and a good inch wide too.

I was intending on only doing 2 gallon changes for the time being about every 4 days, does this seem ok???? Then when the SG is steady then i will increase it a bit more.

Check out the GSP article in our Library for advice on what SG to keep your puffer at for it's size. Care is exactly the same. Also, have you seen our feeding article?
