Dark Patches Come and Go

I bet this question comes up alot, and I don't want to seem lazy not reading through more posts, however, I am having issues with this site taking a long time to load each page.

About a week ago, I bought a green spotted puffer from Wal-Mart on a whim. I set the puffer up in a 10 gallon tank I had laying around. He was bought in fresh water, but i am introducing a light brack mixture, currently 1.003 spec grav. He is currently being fed small snails and frozen plankton.

He shares the tank with 6 ghost shrimp that he has no interest in eating yet. Water temp is kept around 80 degrees, pH is around 7.8 tp 8.0. I am running a carbon undergravel filter and a carbon power filter.

THE PROBLEM: my puffer gets dark splotchy patches on either side where the white begins on his belly. These spots come and go, you can look at him and his belly will be totally white, and 10 minutes later, his belly will be half covered in the dark patches, and he'll be all white again in 10 more minutes. He seems happy, and is eating well. Is this a normal thing, or does he have a problem?

If it comes & goes, I'd say it's just his many moods. How was the tank cycled? Be sure to read the article on them in our Library.

Yup, my GSP gets a dark belly then it goes white on a minute-by-minute basis for no apparent reason.
