Glass is actually harder than most steel, just very brittle. It handles great loads with minimal deformation. The tempered glass bottom is even stronger than standard glass, by a great margin.

However, this means if it gives, it will not crack or even shatter. It will break apart into 100,000 tiny individual cubes of glass about the size of your thumbnail. There is a reason they don't bother to use solid bottoms on stands for large tanks standard.

Also, if the bottom were to break (I have never seen this or heard of it on a filled tank, only when moving) the open bottom would dump the substrate and water strait down and into the stand base, then onto your floor. With a solid bottom, the pressure would throw the rest of the tank upward, possibly breaking it as well depending on what it hit and how it landed, and violently blast substrate and fish alike across the room. If it happened, I'd rather the downward drop first, then the spread outward, over the "air burst" bomb effect.

A wet dry is the way to go. :D just get a HOB skimmer box. Dont try to drill the bottom. :P Put a 30g sump down there and get a high capacity vacume pump.
