What kind of filter do you have for the 46g? If you have or can get an Aquaclear 70, I will send you a cycled sponge through Priority Mail if you would like it. I could also send some snails to start a snail farm for feeding.

The filter that came with the tank is a Marineland Penguin Bio-wheel 200.... I have no idea what that means...


As for where they would be going during the summer, They would go with me wherever I move to and Yes I will be upgrading them to whatever they need. As for how to afford it, if I cannot afford it I have a friend that has said he will step up and pay for it all because he knows it helps me.

OH and as for the 50g of aged water, another friend of mine told me about this place that sells 10g of water for like 1.25 or something like that. She said the conditions are perfect and you can just add it right into the tank. She has GSPs and does it with hers.

Here are the levels now:
Nitrate-0
Nitrite-0
Hardness- 25
Alkalinity-80
PH- 7.8
Ammonia- .5

You're going to need a WAYYY bigger filter then that. Go out and get a AquaClear 110 if you don't want a canister filter. Or you can go and get something like an AquaClear 70 and add that plus your Penguin 200 just run them on each side of the aquarium. You need the filter to be able to filter the WHOLE TANK x10 each hour. So since you got basically a 50 gallon tank you need a 500 gallon per hour filter. In my opinion you're way over your head in this. You can't just take their salt and add it into your aquarium. You have to gradually raise the salt level so your bio filter won't crash. Unless you start the 46 gallon from the start with their water. But even then you're going to have to cycle and will be making a trip to the LFS once a day to get 50 gallons of water.

I don't think you understand what you're getting into. Please talk to us and not your friend first. We have no idea how she takes care of her fish but I can tell you that many of the people here have been keeping puffers for longer than you've been alive.

You need to trust us.

i agree you will need a bigger filter than the one that came with the tank. but i dont think she is talking about adding salt straight to the tank. probably the LFS that her friend told her about is selling RO or RO/DI water for that much in which levels are perfect for setting up/doing a water change, but a cycle would still need to be done once that water is in the tank. salt is the last of her worries right now

She said the conditions are perfect and you can just add it right into the tank" - OP. not once does it say about putting salt straight into the tank, only water. where did you get the urge to comment on "their salt" not being able to be thrown into the tank? its not even in her post about salt or any of her posts for that matter, so why even mention it yet when theres more things to worry about like rehoming a fish or upgrading to at least accommodate the current sizes of the fish? salt is the last step after you get a suitable tank and filtration. so why confuse her more and possibly make it feel like more of a burden than it currently is? dont comment on my posts, if i dont speak to you dont speak to me please. i didnt anywhere bash what you were saying, i just agreed with your thoughts on filtration and said that i dont think the salt was what is being just thrown into the tank, its water. no need to get all PMS on me

question for FLUTTER(not borgey) haha: why isnt RO water good? isnt that or RO/DI supposed to be best for reefs?

Hmm, it felt like the rudeness was directed at me. Perhaps it was at both of us? Either way it was inappropriate.

RO water is excellent for reef tanks and marine tanks in general. With those though the salt adds all of the TDS that the inhabitants need. RO water is very pure and therefore if you put your FW fish in RO water without boosting the TDS or mixing it with tap water then it is very osmotically challenging for them. Life for fish in in constant balance of maintaining appropriate osmotic values. FW fish have a higher concentration of ions in their cells and therefore water is always entering their body via diffusion. When you lower the TDS of the tank water then the osmotic pressures are even higher and even more water will be entering their body. Physiologically this is very stressful for them. This is also why FW fish will never drink water, they don't need to. They fight to eliminate water from their body. Many discus breeders use RO water but they mix it with tap water or use an appropriate product. RO water also has a low pH and is quite unstable in regards to pH. It's also very unhealthy for the beneficial bacteria that we all rely on.

So when you mix RO water for higher level BW and marine then the salt used replaces these necessary TDS. It is also excellent because you don't have the impurities and imbalances that you find in tap water which can be very important for sensitive corals. Low end BW is best with tap water because you only add a small amount of salt.

I can't imagine any store selling water salted or otherwise, that cheap. More than likely, that's the price for 1g of marine water.
