I'll try that. If it'll get him to eat I'll try anything.

I've tried everything. I felt so bad watching him struggle around in the tank that i've moved him to a small cup, he's laying on the bottom and his breathing is pretty shallow. He didn't go for the crushed snails. Is there any way i can make this easier? How do i euthanize him to stop his suffering?

That's awfully sad. I'm sorry to hear that he refuses to eat.

well i read through the the the techniques and i don't honestly think i can do any of them. Firstly the thought of actively killing something is making me cringe (i'm a vegan so animal death bothers me somewhat). I doubt i could stick a needle through his brain without wanting to throw up. He's laying quite still and isn't thrashing about or anything, i'm not sure how much he's suffering but i can hope he'll be gone quickly.

I know, it's killing me. I've put him in the cup, in the tank to keep warm and put the lights out in the room.
I'm already considering moving Button out of the 20g and into my female bettas 5 g and switching her over. The 5g is more heavily planted and the plants and cover are better established, i think he'd be less lonely over there.

So sorry for you (& his) pain. I'd use clove oil.

He still alive this morning, can't believe it i had expected to come downstairs to a dead fish but no, he mustered up the energy and swam to the top of the cup to say hello. Tried again to get him to eat but nothing. I'm going to change his water and see if that perks him up.
When you say use clove oil, do you mean just put him into a cup of clove oil? I don't have any in the house as i'm allergic to it.

Oh! No, don't use that then if you're allergic.
I can't offer any advice at this point. I really am sorry that things are the way they are. I wish he would eat

have you tried the chopstick with a bloodworm trick?

The what? i think that might be the only thing i haven't tried. I've tried wiggling a bloodworm in front of him with a pipette, he didn't go for it. I also tried crushed snails, he just won't eat and now doesn't seem like he even has the energy to eat. I wish he was bigger, when my cat doesn't eat something or take something i can at least sort of force her.
I think if he's not gone by tonight i'll get my mam to come around with some clove oil and i'll let her handle the bottle for me.

it is the same thing.. you use chopstick to simulate live foods. That is what I found out too late.
The other thing was only pick the fat ones that you see eating when doing your selection.
