What about adding a painted wooden frame around the base of the tank? Would that prevent it from toppling over?

Burntsnow is confident it is strong enough it seems, so lets say the stand/ shelf is strong enough a thick piece of wood that would not allow any flex would hold? But then a thicker stand could be bought it sounds like it needs to sit flush somewhere, would the footprint stated not be ok, sorry but I can see what will be posted next lol

I feel like a complete idiot. I have no idea why I said 7 wide. It's actually 20 inches wide, 31 long.
I found a nice 32 gallon that will fit on it perfectly. By the way, no edges are hanging out. I can add a wooden frame, and a solid piece of wood underneath.

xrayjeeper83, I'm sorry but I just don't agree. For a puffer that is 1 inch, 25 gallons is much more than enough to house more than 1. And I wouldn't buy something that I already have just so that I can have a tank in my room. First, I wanted to get a saltwater tank, which was too small for a single saltwater puffer (toby). The people on these forums recommend figure 8s. Now this is what I get when I want to get figure 8s. What happens next, 25 gallon will suddenly be too small for a dwarf? There's not much smaller for you to tell me to put in my tank as far as puffers.

I have a sheet of some kind of composite something wood, not pressed wood, but something compressed. It's not that cheap stuff they make pegged furniture out of that warps when it gets wet. It's about an inch thick, it's very stout. Something like that should be fine.

Oh, and one more thing. What do you all mean by footprint? The dimensions of the base? Because I screwed up on that part. It's 31 long, 20 wide. 32 gallons leaves an extra gallon for the puffers. It's definitely not much, and just barely exceeds the minimum, but it's enough for me to feel confident about getting 2 puffers.

You said you wanted a saltwater tank for a puffer but it was too small.

This is just an out there idea but did you consider another saltwater fish? You could get some false percula and anemone.

Figure 8 puffers get 3", you could still get 2, but besides the space issue, they are a lot more personable kept singly. I had puffers, and I was sure they would be fine. But one was a "surlaW", and the other one was so shy he would swim away and pace constantly. The mean one lives at an LFS now, and Balki, the shy one, he's so much more friendly, and rarely paces. Just saying, if I could do it again, I'd just get one.

I heard that puffers had very doglike personalities. If I kept one as a singleton with, let's say, 2 BBGs in a 25 gallon, would that be a good choice? How would the puffer act differently?

1 puff 2 BBG's sounds great. They can help clean up after his messy chomping and nom nom noming. Shouldn't effect his personality.
