Re: Thinking of getting a Fahaka
my fahaka is HANDS DOWN the coolest fish ive owned. i bought him off craigslist at around 7" for only 50 bucks..... you might wanna check there.
heres my experiences with mine:
(-) messy as all hell... it would be better to get rid of your other tanks as you will be spending the same ammount of time cleaning up after this one fish as you would if you had 2 or 3 tanks of other types of fish.
(+) they really are like a dog. mine even lets me pet the top of his head. he will come to the top of the tank.... i feed him with a pair of tweezers and he takes it right from me... after that, he comes back to the top and points his body down a little and lets me touch the top of his head
(+) i honestly look forward to comming home to him every day... hes the first thing i see when i walk in the door.... greets me even before my cats do... seriously. hes right at the front of the tank
(-) they are EXTREMELY easy to become quickly attached to. my fahaka recently got sick (stupid improper tank switching procedures on my part grrr).... when he got sick, i lost sleep, i checked on him every 15 minutes or so, night and day, i even cried. anyway, he did pull through and i was extatic!!!!
(-/+) at first, your tank may look bare having a 150 gal for just one baby fahaka.... but eventually... your tank will have a spectacular fish in it... hard to miss in any tank.... it sure does make for some bragging rights i know mine does!!!!! also, starting out with a very large tank for a tiny baby will benefit him in the longrun. he will grow much bigger if given the space to start out with.... mine i think has been stunted in his growth.... his former owners had him in a 30gal tall.... so not much horizontal swimming space... or space at all for a 7" fish!!!! hes now 8" but i dont think he will get much bigger due to his small starter tank
***** if you decide to get one.... word of advice, DO NOT GET SAND! my fahaka broke 3 filters in 1 month until i smartened up and got gravel!... since they love to burrow, sand gets fluffed up and sucked into the filter. and it will break it almost every time. since i switched to gravel though, never had any issues. overall, they are totally awesome... i say if you are up for a challenge and an emotional bond between a human and a fish, definately go for it!!!!!!

Re: Thinking of getting a Fahaka
Hey,
Thanks for all the great info, I have gotten pool sand it is a bit heavier sand, so the filters should be okay, I am very much getting a fahaka, I am waiting to
get him as I have a project on the go with my mustang, and I don't have the money or time to pick one up yet. I have a 55 Gal I am putting him in for the
first few months, till I can save for a 120-150 gal, I might even wait and save till I can get the bigger tank, still debating it?.
I will be down to two tanks soon, one with 4 DSPs and the Fahaka tank. So I will have lots of time to spend with him.
I am sad I have to wait, but i would rather be ready then to put him in any situation to harm him

Re: Thinking of getting a Fahaka
Hey All,
Well I got the fish I am keeping into a 20 Gal from the 55 Gal, And I am starting the process of setting up Samson's new diggs
I have the gravel i am keeping piled up in the middle with a nice log on top, and java fern all round it. And the root is in there as well, I plan on washing some sand and adding it
to either said of the gravel, Its gonna look awesome I think?. I am hoping to pick him up sooner then I thought, depending on what else my mustang needs.
Seeing the tank taking shape is getting me hopful and excited again
I gave a bunch of my fish to the LFS, I had alot of fry, So I was given some in store fish credit so i was able to pick up a black molly(male) and a couple Male guppies, a spilt tail, and I think a fire cobra, very pretty tails.. I will try and take a few pics of them, and samsons new tank tonight once I have the sand in and it settles..

Re: Thinking of getting a Fahaka
i used to use my guppies as feeders lol i had a big tank that quickly became over crowded and at the time there was no LFS around me that wouold take them..... i didnt like the thought of store bought feeder goldfish....with the parasites and terrible as far as meals go.... anyway.... im not sure if they are any better than gold fish nutritionally wise..... but i used them for my cichldis as treats because guppies help improve color. i dont know about for puffers.... but im sure your fahaka would love a treat once in a while
if thye are bad to eat, im sure someone here will correct me. anyway, thats always one thing you could do with your guppies.... i liked giving my guppies because i knew they were disease free and wouldnt get my fish sick.... i bet your puffer would love one once in a whle, they LOVE to hunt hehe...
