Yes, I am a canister nut. I am also a total life cycle cost nut. To me, quality canisters with "permanent" media are the lowest total life cycle cost items.
"Permanent" to me is 10 years or more. If the equipment lasts over ten years, its purchase cost is zero from then on, only operating costs count in. As all but a couple of my canisters are ovr ten years old, only their electrical usage and occasional part replacements are operating costs. Ditto for tanks and light fixtures - but the tubes themselves are costs for the the tubes and their power usage. Power is my major cost item, with foods likely next, followed by water and replacement parts. Part of that is offset by LFS credits for fish and plants. I don't spend as much money on my too-many tanks as many other folks w/MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome).
