if ammonia high a 50% change will certainly lower this reading but sounds like tank cycling? please read the relevant advice on this site for that, please will make more sense if you do so are there fish in the tank? still no luck on other test kits then? and hows the leg?

legs fine, ammonia test kit is all i have right now, the tank has been cycled for about 2 months, changed to BW and my ammonia is around a .25, its been lowering a bit, so i dont know if i should leave it at is, or just do the WC
you upped the sg too fast so it is cycling again, you prob killed most of the bacteria (just read back through the post) if its dropping i would leave it and keep an eye did you read the fishless cycle article? if not please please please do it will help more than you would believe, honestly will take 2 mins to read and understand. glad leg on the mend

The bacteria eat the ammonia. Ammonia kills fish. To cycle your tank you need to have an ammonia source however to do this kindly you must not have fish in the water. When you remove the fish you remove the ammonia source and therefore you must replace it

Yes, one without soap in it. That you can add in once the fish are out. As a bonus the tank will cycle more quickly
