I am a bit puzzled by your response.

Do you have an ammonia source? Do you have test kits that will tell you how much ammonia you have in the tank?

What kind of algae? How long has it been there?

i dont have the kit yet and its been there for a year and its green

ok maybe I am missing something?

Do you have any animals (fish, snails, anything) in the tank?

What has been living in the tank for this year?

it was my dad tank then the gold fish died in new years and its been void since and he gave me the tank so imm going to cycle it and get congo puffers in it

please, only 1 congo puffer to a tank
they don't do well at all with other fish, not even their own kind
but they do just fine by themselves!

Nope you can't keep two unless you want to risk losing both of them.

So the tank has been sitting with water for that long, you probably have some sort of old tank syndrome from h-e double hockey sticks.

Ok, So nothing is in the tank, but you have algae so i guess you have a good light source and not an ammonia source. Well, I guess you could have an ammonia source if the tank is really dirty and has never been cleaned and has never been vacuumed...but it is not the kind of ammonia source you want to cycle your tank.

If I were you, I would get rid of everything in the tank and clean it completely before you cycle it because you will have a difficult time getting rid of that algae if you don't. Also move the tank away from that light source. Use Oxiclean

But I really do not think a Congo Puffer is going to be right for you.

I have been looking through your posts on some other forums and there is something totally off with some of the things you say.

I do not know now what it is, but something is not right and a I really do not think a puffer of any sort is going to survive long in your tank. PLEASE I do not mean to be offensive or hurt your feelings, I AM ONLY THINKING OF THE FISH'S WELFARE.

Something is just not right, I do not know what. But something is not right.

I would like to recommend some heartier species of fish
Glo fish
Cardinal tetras
Skirt tetras
Guppies
A nice school of skirt tetra's would be beautiful.

I am only concerned with the welfare of puffers.

we always cleaned it and about 2 weeks before the fish died and only the front on the tank have algea the rest of it is doesnt have any we always cleaned the tank and i have a 2nd tank that have a goldfish in it so ill move the goldfish in the 2nd tank to our 10 gallon tank

my personal advice (take it or leave it):
Get a liquid test kit. Test that old tank. Ammonia readings, Nitrite Readings and Nitrate readings. Don't do anything before that.

Once we have those numbers we (the forum) can walk you through the rest of the process

ok i will get the test soon from petsmart

Get an API Freshwater liquid test kit that at least has nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and ph tests.

The strips are not accurate

You might find a better deal online. It should be around 25-30 bucks
