Hehe yea I think that might be the problem. Sadly since his accidents Winston has gone off rivershrimp - maybe afraid that they're not really river shrimp after all

Puffertt77 you've fed Naboo live crabs before I believe? Where did you get them from and did you have to quarantine them or anything before you fed him them?

Puffertt77 you've fed Naboo live crabs before I believe? Where did you get them from and did you have to quarantine them or anything before you fed him them?

I fed him Red Claw Crabs, they're quite expensive since they're just going to get eaten at £1.99 each or 6 for £9.99 but it's so worth it when you see how excited/crazy they get over them
The crabs are pretty clever and can find good places to hide. I've put 7 in there and a couple lasted for weeks, I was sure they'd all been eaten whenone day I see one noticably larger than when I got it sitting on my bog wood, it'd found a hollow part of the bog wood inside which it accessed digging through the gravel! 2 more managed to climb up into my baby Guppy net box floating at the top of my tank. Which was handy as they ate all the left over food that the Guppy's left.

I got them from my lfs, a lot of lfs seem to have them. I never quarintined the ones I got and have had no problems

Try some clams or mussels

Please try to breed them as they have very complex breeding cycles.

I too think it's best to wait on the new puffer, but if the LFS isn't keeping him in his needed housing it's kinda up in the air for me. I have been to so many shops and have seen puffers living in horrible conditons (knowing i cannot give them the proper housing but also knowing I would take better care of them). When i first got pookie (my fahakah) the store didn't even know what type of puffer he was, i'm sure he would have died if i hadn't stepped in. I did not have a big enough tank for him at the time, but had it up and running for him soon after. I'd just make sure you have a good game plan of what you are going to do and don't push anything back, you are the only thing keeping your animals alive and you must take full responsiblity for them. If you think the shop is taking good care of him then leave it at that and get one when you have your ducks in a row, if not do what you think is best for the animal and what your heart tells you to do....two cents in

I went to look at the puffer since he's in the same LFS as my Mantis I maybe getting and was told he's in a bad way! The LFS Quarintine their fish out back for 1 week to make sure they are eatting properly and have nothing wrong with them, unfortunatley he's refusing food and seems to have other things wrong with him to The guy said they'd never sell him like that as they've got every kind of treatment and food to help him out

I did see the Guinefoul they have though and it was huge, I'd say about 10/12inches long! Here's a coupole of pix, I couldn't get very good ones as he was hiding behind the tank frame/border

Quarintining is always a good idea, just to be on the safe side. You never know what they've picked up through central filtration. *ick*

It's an expression. As in "Icky" and "to ick". Not the disease.
And yes, the food can carry in lovely parasites that can kill your fish.

If I quarintine the Red Claw Crabs I get how do I know when they're ready to go into the Puffer tank to be eaten?

If you qt for 30 days you should be safe.

Basically, if it's still alive and has no obvious problems by then, it's okay to feed it.
