you really have to work out the inside and get that soft stuff ALL out.
It can be sanded and smoothed like wood after that

ok.. not while the tank is cycling... don't wash the sand / gravel.
you can clean the filter but use the old tank water for that don't use the tap water.

a gravel vac is good. When you take out the dirty water from the 10gal use that water to clean the sponges in the filter and nothing else
Just remember not to use the tap water for cleaning the filter. That is very important

You can vacuum the gravel...but don't clean anything except the glass..
Water change and vacuum!

Yes, it's ok to vacuum the gravel any time you change the water. Just make sure you don't scrub things down or do more than that right now

It sounds like you are overfeeding. Feed only what they can eat completely, in 5 minutes. What foods are you offering them?

shrimp for the puffer and pillets for the cichlid
