I cant speak for anyone else but if you dont have a somewhat heavily planted tank and dose nutrients then you could probably leave the lights on or off, shouldnt really matter. But it has been mentioned that lighting will stimulate feeding so maybe being in the dark they wont be expecting to get fed, etc. For me it was simple... unless I can dose excel and ferts atleast twice a week the lights have to be off or else algea will go nuts. If you have multiple lights you could disconnect half of them for a reduced amount of lighting. I may have been able to get away doing that but to get to my bulbs is a pain.
