I wonder if he said to turn up the heat that high, because he's used to dealing w/discus that are generally kept at 84-86?

PP the reasoning behind raising the temp

1is that it increases the fish's metabolism,and immune system.
2 the life cycles of certain parasites is greatly accelerated, this allows you to speed the cure, and gives them less time to infest the fish.

I understand all that but maybe a regular puffer/fish wouldn't need it as high as discus, since they're already kept so much higher than most tropicals.

well, my LFS was all out of any form of metro.....

But I had to go away tonight (one of my best friends going away partys), and my dad stopped at a pet store. he said there were three forms of metro, and unfortuneatly im not sure he picked the right one.

its by Jungle, and is called "Internal Parasite Guard". it says that it "clears internal parasites".

unfortuneatly no percentage on ingredients, but here is the list: sodium chloride, metronidazole, praziquantel.

it also says it has an ingredient known to the state of california to cause cancer

it says to add it to the water, and that it is not to be used in fishes food.

what do you guys think? use it in the water or look for soemthing else?

I think I shall raise the temp to 86 degrees.

I hesitate to use any antibiotics. correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldnt even small doses of furan(im not even sure what that is lol) cause my tank to recycle?

I have not been able to find B-S in my area...

any ideas about the med I picked up? think I should treat with it, or wait to see if I find something else. it is something you put in the water.

i'm going to go ahead and treat with the parasite med that I got. Flutter isnt exactly doing awsomely, and clearly isnt himself. I sure hope hexamita is the correct diagnosis, and that the med I got will fix it...


I really wish that my LFS hadnt been out of vita-chem. i'm gonna call every pet store in town today.

The parasite guard has metro in it It is very close to hex o mite it also has some prazi which will kill gill flukes and intestinal tape worm the reason for the high temp with metro is that is really does not become a very active ingredient until 90 degrees

ok, so I will continue to use it in the water? (im not sure if its ok to put in the food...it says not to on the bottle though)

i'll continue to use the melafix as well.

and i'll raise the tempto 90 over the next couple of days. its at 84 degrees, but I dont want to raise it too much all at once.

Don't forget to add an airstone then.

ok, cmon now, im not that stupid lol, I removed the carbon and added an airstone.

temp is up to 86-87 degrees.

Flutter is back to breathinh hard again.... its like he is breathing twice as fast and he keeps his mouth wide open.

he has some weird white fuzzy stuff coming out of his anus, similar to the stuff that comes out his pimples. the solid stuff that comes out his pimples eventually turns fuzzy too.

I got a picture of his poo, and man is it a crappy picture! (pun intended) it was kinda stringy, so I wanted to post it to see if you guys thought it was stringy enough for him to have parasites. as a note, this is NOT the white fuzzy stuff I was talking about. the one bump that he had when he started breathing hard a few days ago is almost gone. but thats happend many times before.....
