This may have been covered already but how did you cycle the tank? Have you tested the water parameter's lately?

The tank was cycled just by using ammonia and reading the nitrite and nitrate levels until it was ready. The fish has been in the aquarium for just over a month.

No reason there should be a spike, nitrite is reading as zero now, but the PH is high, around 7.8 at a guess from the colour. Looks like the KH went over 12. It was under 10 previously.

What are your nitrAtes and ammonia levels?

Yes PufferDek..I have all those puffers at the moment. I also have a couple more species on order that I'm hoping to be filled soon.

At one stage back in UK I had over 20 tanks generally with 1 or 2 puffers in. Here's the list of puffer species I've kept before

Yeah, thats incredible, like a puffer safari. You should get yourself listed with Quebec Tourism and start charging entry

To clarify, some of the tanks had dividers, These days I am always looking at Kijiji for "value" tanks, I know some people might like to buy all 1st hand but there are plenty of bargains around, ESPECIALLY near Moving day in Montreal. A bit of tape and a silicone gun and your away....

We have cultivated a number of aquarium outlets so we get to know whats on the lists coming in but often the more exotics puffers don't get here because of the lack of direct flights from the 'trade hubs'.

Indeed they did, mainly because I have an awesome puffer pusher...er hubby...

Personally I would hold out for at least a 55gal if you have space, we have a couple of them paid around $110 with Fluval 4 canister and lights, cover stand. As I say in month or so a lot goes on the market as people change apartments and do not want to drag the stuff with them. Picked up a saltwater set-up 125gal around that time with overflow and sump, home made skimmer and hood and stand for $150.... Now its our reef tank... the upgrades cost a whole lot more though..

The good olde days before children and moving across the world..I'm slowly getting back into action and the kids are getting used to finding fish keeping stuff all over the place.

I originally started out wanting a small set up for the kids bedroom.....55g must be about 48" long?

Yes 4foot, but around 12 inches deep, so quite versatile as not a large foot print, we have our south American puffers in one with a high flow stream power heads, another is the Brackish setup and the third a boxfish marine...
