Also what exactly is filter floss? What do you mean by 1" and can I get it at like any petsmart or would it have to be a LFS?

filter floss is a product you can buy as a stand alone media. it comes in a big roll. Or you can use nylon pillow stuffing. It should be the top layer in your filter and will need to be changed frequently. It is disposable and not really reusable.

Ok so currently I have those white cylinders on the top layer of my filter. Should I remove those and replace it with the floss? Or should I remove the carbon bag underneath and put the floss on top of the white cylinders? Sorry I don't know what they're called :/

the white cylindrical things are the bio media. The stages should be: Sponge (mechanical) at the bottom, Biomedia in the middle and the floss at the top.

You can ditch the carbon.

The bio-media (ceramic) goes on top of the floss or the floss will float away. Save the carbon, you don't need it. Use it to remove meds only.

LOL!! I am the opposite. Floss on top for quick and easy removal. Once it is water logged it doesn't go anywhere and I keep the biomedia fully submerged. Each to his / her own I suppose. What ever works for you will do.

Just left my LFS and unfortunately he said they were out of stock on filter floss, but he gave me something similar he said I can use instead, it's an Asian brand so I don't know exactly what it's called but on the back I read filter cotton so let's hope it helps. I also got a bottle of dr. Tim's. Thanks guys for all your help its greatly appreciated! :D

Is there a Petco or Petsmart nearby? I know they would carry it if you still need to get some. (at least around here they do)

Way cheaper at Walmart or a sewing store. ;) Look for pillow stuffing.

The time frame varies with the tank operator. If you overfeed and/or feed too often, the spkes will be bigger and longer. Then you have to do more water changes to keep the spikes under control.

As far as I know, Dr. Tims IS Biospira. I believe what happened is he bought the rights to it.
