Just few days ago, I read up an old article about using salt as treatment as well. It has mention of RTR's method as well. But the author has use even up to 4-5 tbs/gallon. Without ill effects but advised only up to max of 10days. But of course if have to monitor closely, once they feel uncomfortable, wc. So, overdosing is highly unlikely. Unless in huge amount.
