White swollen lips :(

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Re: White swollen lips :(
Good morning. The tank is looking much better. Manson came out of his cave to greet me and he is no longer breathing hard! His lips are already looking better...they are still slightly swollen but not as white. He is actually moving his mouth instead of it hanging wide open. I could not make it to the store for the antibiotics but will have my husband get them in a couple of hours. Reaper, thanks for the prayers, I do appreciate them! Dr.- whatever fishues you are having I hope you can get it all straightened out. PP, Seven and Reaper, thanks for all the help last night! Hopefully I can get Manson back to 100% swiftly.

That is wonderful to hear! So you only ended up doing the 80% water change? It's surprising that he would look better after just that. I hope things continue to improve and Manson recovers completely!

Poor water conditions usually contributes to 99% of health problems.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I agree completely, but improvement of water quality alone rarely seem to "cure" infections, so I'm impressed.

Once again, something I missed in a post.
Anyway, that makes a lot more sense why it would start clearing up then.

I'm so glad you caught it early. I've always been impressed with the melafix/pimafix combination. Looks like he'll be making a full recovery!

Sounds good. I thought it was 5 days for Maracyn, but could be wrong. Just make sure you dose the full amount for the full time period or you run the risk of antibiotic resistant pathogens.

Pufferpunk wrote:1 tbsp/10g of salt. I would also recommend the Maracyn, along with Mela/Pimafix. Up those WC to 80 % to get out whatever bacteria that rotting wood added to the tank.
Is this measurement for treatment universal? Or is it specific for mouth fungus?

Re: White swollen lips :(
The package says put one packet per 10 gallons of water on day one. 24 hours later re-dose in the same manner. 24 hours after 2nd dose do a 25% water change then repeat. I bought the API brand.Reaperpilot2014 wrote:Sounds good. I thought it was 5 days for Maracyn, but could be wrong. Re: White swollen lips :(
His lips are no longer white or puffy!!!! He even ate a few blackworms!!! Right after he ate he puffed. I have never seen a fish puff as much as he does!
Should I NOT use the antibiotics since he seems to be better? Maybe just another water change and re-dose with the mela/Pima/salt combo?
