Rinse the bajesus out of that sand or your water will look like skim milk.
Nice to see everything coming together!

that 5gal bucket in front of the tank has the sand in it... anyone have any ideas for an easier way to rinse the sand?
My plan right now is to put the hose in the bottom and stir like crazy then use the siphon to take out the dirty water
SYN i know you have posted about rinsing your sand, how are you doing it?
Also does anyone know a generic hardware store i can but egg crate at, looked at ace and a little mom and pa shop around here today and nothing, going up to home depot tomorrow.

Lowes should have egg crate, not all do.
Your bucket and hose method is a great one!
I didn't have access to a hose, so I put the sand in my water barrel (unused rubbermade trashcan on wheels) and rolled it into the kitchen, used the water sprayer from the sink, stirred the sand, and used my utility pump to transport the water from the barrel into the sink. It was kind of awkward.
The sand still clouded the water when I did a fw test, so I filled the tank half way, stirred the sand, then syphoned the milky water out. I did this several times. Yesterday I added 30 gallons (about half full) of saltwater. I placed a clear plastic sheet I got on a role at Hobby Lobby on the bottom with the a few pieces if dry rock to weigh it down. Even though my utility pump issues forth 530 gph, and still managed to stir a little bit of sand, the water was fairly clear!
A smaller powerhead had been running with a prefilter on it today, and it's looking really clear now, maybe 97%.

I gave up finding mine after 5 rinsed it was still milky so I just put it in my tank. My sump cleared it within 2 days. Home depot also has the egg crate in there electrical area , with there ceiling tiles

Lol, this entire time I was thinking egg carton, NOT egg crate. Anyway, it looks like you got a good deal on a nice tank.

It's sold as a light diffuser panel, I agree the term egg crate is too ambiguous.

Even with the term egg "crate", a lot of different images come to mind. They probably meant the foam kind, but there's plastic and wood as well. I really did have this funny image of a rock sitting on an egg carton, all the while thinking, "will that really last in salt water?" lol.
