Many to most hobbyists tend to over-light their tanks, intensity or hours per day or both. Many to most hobbyists tend to overfeed (including me). Nutrients and light can lead to plant growth or to algae. If you have too much light and nutrients, and no plants, you get algae. The type may vary, but excess nutrient and excess light has one sure result - something grows beside the fish.
