YES YOU CAN!!!! It's so easy and so much better! Boil ABout 2-3 cups of water and 5 teabags on the stove for about 15 minutes. Add 1 cup is sugar when you're finished boiling and stir it until it's dissolved. Put mixture into a 1gallon pitcher and fill with cold water!!! That's it!

I'm thinking more like 3 cups of sugar...I'm from the south..lol

Oh mmmmmm. Ever since I lived in Louisiana I have had special appreciation for sweet tea!! For a fun twist, now take Srkoe's recipe, then mix into glasses with ice, fresh lemon juice (a substantial amount), rum, and crushed mint leaves. Adjust sugar levels as to personal preference That's my favorite for a lazy summer afternoon sitting on my porch enjoying my little porch garden while reading a good book!

I never really liked sweet tea, but then again all I had before was arizona's take or sweet tea or from a drive through. So I gave Srkoe's recipe a shot, its pretty good. I used lipton tea (not my favorite), but figured it was a good start, all we had in the house was lipton and green tea. I could see making this again. I only used 1 cup of sugar, I dont get how anyone could put 3 cups in.

Right now I am sipping on a the drink that puffermichigan posted, pretty damn good as well. What kind of rum do you use? I got bacardi clear, I think it could be much better with a darker rum, or even something like makers mark? I think its growing on me.

For water I have a 3 stage filter under my kicthen sink, its pretty much a 4 stage RO unit with the RO taken off, 10 micro sediment filter followed by a 5micro carbon and 1 micro carbon, I hardly ever have to change filters and the water tastes great!

For something spiked, any variation of a screw driver, typically just homemade fresh squeezed OJ with stolichnaya, but sometime orangina or what ever. But really it all depends on mood, white russians and jack and coke is up there as well. Hell with the whole sweet tea / southern thing, now I want a mint julep! When I go backpacking we sometimes bring a flask of everclear and have that with tang, its so gross, but hell its cocktails in the middle of the woods, days from anywhere...

For something not spiked, coke, homemade OJ with sparkling water is killer, etc

Hey Mekong, I'm glad you liked it! I have used Maker's and it's quite tasty. (Actually, once I accidentally used some of my fiance's single-malt scotch, THAT was not very tasty. Haha he laughed but I could tell he wasn't too thrilled, that stuff was expensive lol. I guess I'd been sipping on too many spiked sweet teas at that party!) For tea, my fave is a mix of Lipton and Constant Comment. The Constant Comment adds a little bit of orangey spice, but a mix is good so it doesn't get too powerful. That's the same combo I use when I'm not in a sweet mood and just want to make sun tea in a jar and add a little lemon.

Ouch, single malt can be really pricey! Next time I'll try the constant comment mix and makers maybe even a dash of triple sec or something like that, this has killer cocktail written all over it.

Just wondering, why do people make sun tea, whats wrong with just heating water and then chilling it? Is it all just the novelty of having the sun do the heating?

Anyone here ever have a chevala? I know there are tons of different ways of making them, some more like a bloody marry, but around here its modelo beer (not dark) with a TON of lime just, salted rim and a shot of tequila. Really refreshing and goes great with carne asada street tacos.

I just remember my dad making it almost every day in the summer in MN when it was sunny enough to put a big jar out on the garden fence, and so "family tradition" led me to do the same. I asked him about it, and he said (and I quote), "well, ya know, it's just too hot and humid to heat up a whole pot of water inside the house to make tea in the middle of the summer." So there it is. One darn good reason for sun tea! Simple practicality of having tea without overheating the kitchen. I could tell that he totally thought that I had grown up way too air-conditioned, although I do remember being young in the 80s with only a giant window fan and the lake outside to keep us cool in the summer .

well now I know, and knowing is half the battle:

Using water that is well cooler than boilings water means less bitterness in the final product. We make "sun" tea on the sunless kitchen counter. It is a tad slower than sun-warmed water but still works.

Mekong, I like 3 cups of sugar in my tea because I'm from south carolina; you don't because you are from northern Cali.
I remember going up to restaraunts in Virginia (still the south mind you) and them not even having sweet tea....WTF?!?
My grandma, also from Va, used to ask me if i wanted a little tea to go with my sugar...lol...I was like 12 though...

My dad is from GA and when he transferred to Maine in the navy, he was shocked to find that Ice tea was A) a seasonal drink and B) always unsweet.

For Southern-style tea, you'd use black tea.

My mom makes really good tea with black tea, handfuls of crushed fresh mint from the garden, and stevia (a no-calorie natural sweetener). But the mint is so good that I often skip the sweetener.

My favorite drinks are lemonade, Mom's tea, jasmine green tea, Lemon Zinger tea, organic milk (yes, organic milk DOES taste better), and, if we're talking alcohol, then sweet white wine with a kick, preferably a pinot.
