I looked high and low on fishbase to match that guy and I can't Their pics are so poor it is sad.

The closest I found was a web burrfish, but I'm sure one of the mentors will be able to ID him

I dont know if you lot remember me, i hung out here for a couple of years before moving on to a full reef and sadly rehoming my puffs... I know float around on the UK Site PFK.

I pointed Steve at this site, and I ID's his porc as a Burr. We've been working hard on getting her feeding really well, because i know from my days on here just how hard these guys are to keep alive.. but Burr is doing really well, and is on prawn and (as of today) muscles... Yay.

The 'dogface' is a rescue and i, like you guys, am unsure of the long term compatibility... i know many who keep porcs and dogfaces with no issue... but this is a Burr, and i know they are much more shy.. so i dunno.

I do know Steve is tank mad, and so is his Mrs, so an upgrade is not an issue... but whether the two can be kept together is an unknown to me.


Anyways, play nice with Steve, he's a good guy. I promise.

Who is it who owns Paris? I want HoneBy to see her assuming she's still doing well? Only other Burr i've seen do well, and good inspiration for HoneyB...

That would be Myaj. She's been MIA for a while... It's a different species burrfish too.

Myaj has been pretty busy, from what she's told us. But last I heard, Paris was doing really well. Myaj had some good stories about her.

That what I thought that was, a burrfish. I had a small striped burrfish way back. Look like dog chew toys I alway thought...lol. Love the 2 species of puffers you have. Look at PC's quote, the bottom quote and you will see that this group is a little more sensitive then most. Some are like a wild pack of dogs at times...lol. But a very puffer knowledgeable group they are though. Btw, welcome to the group.

I think every one here has a "specialty" and that no one person has all the answers. Some are chem, some are FW ID some are SW ID, some are mechanics... it all varies. Yet, once you get to know the forum you'll get used to it. Each has a valid response and each has a merit, and if not, someone will shoot it down and say "hey, that isn't right..."

I'm sorry you had a rough start here and I'd like to say welcome We never finish learning and I do hope that you will feel more welcome here in the future.

As you now know, those two species probably aren't compatible long term. I'm sure you'll be able to figure something out and I would love to hear more about your burrfish. I adore them but haven't heard too much about them.

Certainly none of the more common Diodon species. It probably does not belong top the typical "burrfish" genus Chilomycterus either (the differentiation of Diodontids into "burrfishes" and "porcupines" is not very valid and quite inaccurate by the way... you won't find it in "good" literature... Some can erect some of their spines, but not all, what does it make them?).

Cyclichthys orbicularis is very similar to the pictures above, but the yellow to orange patches are not so typical. However, here's another one IDd correctly as Cyclichthys orbicularis (from spine counts): http://www.flickr.com/photos/7763842@N06/2847243607/ It has large yellow patches, too. So even if the C. orbicularis seen in trade most often don't have them, they are obviously possible.

Another name I could think of is Cyclichthys hardenbergi, which occurs in Indonesia and might get caught for the aquarium trade. The two can reliably be told apart by the numbers of their spines above their eyes and between the narines.
