He seems to be doing good, but he sure likes to stay in his cave and watch me.

I have used driftwood in some of my fw tanks over the years that lowered the ph and also softens the water. The driftwood will lower it gradually while it might turn your water a yellow tint. I always like using African driftwood that you buy at most lfs's. It seems to be a harder wood and dont decay as fast, imo.

I believe it is called Mopia, very nice stuff that really should be cured first. It is a form of bog wood.

There is one out of the USA and I have forgotten the name but it is equally as good and very hard and knarly. Not bog wood but actual wood and tree branches.

There's something off when the pH is higher than the tap & no buffer is being used.

I wouldn't worry about the pH value but do try to find out why there is such a difference. It's not necessarily the number that matters but what's causing the numbers.
