i also have a baby albino rainbow shark in it, but im looking for a bigger tank for him/her because she grows to be 7 in. long. and mine went from 2.5 in. to 3 in. over night. maybe she's just weird.

I heard that too, but I've also seen people on NR say their glass wasn't thick enough to keep mantis shrimp and I can remember reading it somewhere else online too...

Probably just a myth like 30% of the fishkeeping 'facts.'

Id love to get a mantis shrimp one day. Watching videos of them on youtube is crazy.

Come on BC, its been a month, you need to decide! Do a low tech planted! Make it like this http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/image ... _4371e.jpg and breed shrimps for your GSP.

Contact the guy, Shayf on The Planted Tank Forum, ask him what kinds of moss he has, and the dosings and stuff. I'd say its probably 10 - 20 gallons, judging by the shrimp size.

For low tech you need lighting. For a 10 gallon don't go over about 20 watts, I'd go for 15-ish, dose the amount of Excel the bottle says, or less. Excel has been shown to kill inverts if overdosed, so be careful. For ferts I'd just go with some sort of liquid fert, like Aqueon Plant Food, but do 1/2 recommended. Don't get any gravel/soil with ferts in it has mosses don't have roots, so it'd be a waste. Mosses grow slow, so be patient. Good luck!

Yea... I watched some vids on the mantis, didn't realize the "punch" and at the velocity that they do. Yes, I can see them breaking the glass of a typical tank

I just watched a video of a research facility keeping mantis shrimp that said they could smash very thick aquarium glass (peacock mantis shrimp 'smash' their prey and could do the same to your glass). Apparently they have the force of a 22 bullet.

Oh, and not to mention there a mantis shrimp found worldwide. That's all I needed to hear... haha

Hold on, now. There's a very small snake for which a 10 gallon would be perfect. Don't remember the name, though. It would also be good for a tarantula. Maybe a couple of emperor scorpions.

But if you want some cool fish, try five blind cave tetras. They are so cool. They have no pigmentation and no eyes, having adapted to life deep inside caves. I've always wanted to keep some of those. That's about the only fish I wouldn't keep in a planted tank, because I'd want to emulate the cave environment. Maybe even just keep it lit with a few small blue or black light LEDs.

I'm really liking this idea, lol. That's going to be my next tank.

I couldn't own them, they freak me out, too weird looking. I always feel sorry for them when I see them at the LFS.

I think they're really neat. And I don't feel sorry for them like I do artificially bred albino fish that I see. (Or blood parrots, in fact.) I think they're an amazing product of evolution. Their lack of eyes is absolutely no problem with them. They didn't need them in the dark caves, so they save metabolism with the lack. And their sense of smell is awesome. They also have developed another sense (I forget what it's called) that allows them to locate things in the dark. How is that not cool? They friggin' rock.

Well, as they say, to each their own. I think it's great that you like them. That's why different people have different fish. Whatever catches your fancy.

Caves absolutely intrigue me. I'd love to go deep in one to check out the fauna down there. My favorites are the cave shrimp. Well, cause they're shrimp.

I love people who love shrimp. Considering I'm a shrimp, that's not surprising, is it?
