That's all I have on my 55g GSP tank with sump. I don't have near enough LR yet, but I'm working on that. In the meantime I continue to perform PWCs on a regular basis to keep the nitrates down.

Whether you need more than LR and a skimmer depends a lot on how much LR/sand you have, what skimmer you buy, how your tank is set up (stocking levels, powerheads, turnover, etc.). Rather than purchasing a second canister though, I would invest that money in live rock.

Nope, other than vacuuming the substrate during PWCs and scrubbing the water once every month or two with a diatom filter.

Interesting. My sump serves as my mech for me, as does 2 quick filters on powerheads.

I didn't state that I can't get a sump. I will need 2 cannisters, skimmer and LR.

Can I use the filter in the meantime with my F8 tank?
Oops, sorry, I missed that.

Ybenormal, do you now agree with me that I need the 2 cannisters because i'm not having a sump.

I have no sump either. Just running LR & a Coralife Super Skimmer 125 on a 55g tank. 2 canisters do not equal a sump--they work entirely differently. Did you read that link about using FW filtration on a SW tank?

Now I am extremely confused. Would it really harm my tank to add the 2 cannister filters?

Yes, you will have tons of nitrAtes. The 1st thing I removed when my BW tank became SW was the Eheim. 2nd to go was the Aquaclear 500, which I use for just a bag of carbon now, to help w/any chemical warfare that may develop. I have a deep sand bed & no mechanical filtration (other than skimmer).

lisalisa,

Yes, I also have a sump and I guess that would qualify as a form of mech filtration. I plan on enlarging the sump and adding a refugium over the coming weeks.

Raphael,

If you haven't done so already, please read the article in the link that I provided. I think it will answer many of your questions.

BTW, no one said that the canisters would HARM your tank. We stated that they can become nitrate factories if not properly maintained. I went a little further to state that they are not even required on a SW tank . Big difference! And no, I do not agree that lack of a sump means that you need to use the canisters. Read the article!
