Aren't Monos bred in Singapore for the trade though?

I just take a water sample to my LFS to get it checked on a refractometer. So far my Instant Ocean hydrometer has been spot on.

I use an AQUAMEDIC refractometer for my brackish tank, it is shared with my other half and her marine setup.
it cost us about £40 from Maidenhead Aquatics, which to the folks across the pond equates to somewhere in the region of $75 - $80
Not cheap (but also not bank breaking), but a very worth while investment for the health of your little inflatable buddies

I have to agree, I got the portable refractometer off of Drs. Foster & Smith. It's so much easier to read than the floating refractometers. I never had a swing arm type one, but as much as I use it, it was well worth it.

I remember using the huge ones of those in my Chem 101 class. I may still have mine around. I never thought about using it for the salinity! Thanks.

I've got a hydrometer and I quite like it, but I can definitely vouch for refractometers too. I used to use a portable refractometer in my estuarine field research all the time, and they're pretty spot on.

So far it works really well. I would suggest buying the calibration fluid, too.

I have a refractometer but have never used it because the instructions say that the water has to be room temperature before one tests it. That confused me... the calibration thing was tedious enough!

Any one you all suggest in particular?

Not really. I just got the cheapest one on Ebay.
