Bloody hell..... what a mayhem by just tapping the glass. Sorry to hear the puffers didn't make it 
From what I have read you have done all the things a loving owner would do to keep his little friends alive.
On the upside, since I'm new to keeping fish I have atleast now learned by your experience not to ever tap the glass or let somebody else do it.
